Zero-sequence current transformer is used to detect zero-sequence current, so it can be called zero-sequence current filter, its structure is similar to ordinary through-core current transformer, except that its primary winding is the wire of the three phases of the protected system, and the secondary winding reacts to the zero-sequence current of the primary system.
In the neutral point is not directly grounded system, the zero-sequence current transformer and the grounding relay constitute a single-phase grounding protection device. During normal operation of the system, the vector sum of the three-phase current passing through the primary side of the zero-sequence current transformer is zero, that is, Ia+Ib+Ic = 0. At this time, the zero-sequence current transformer is in a non-working state, when a single-phase ground fault (such as A phase) occurs, Ia+Ib+Ic=3Ioc, 3Ioc is equal to the vector sum of the ground capacitance current of phase B and phase, and a zero-sequence magnetic flux appears in the core, which induces electromotive force in the secondary winding, and the secondary current flows through the grounding relay to make it operate.
Simply put, the zero-sequence current transformer is used with a relay protection device or signal device when the zero-sequence ground current is generated in the power system, so that the device components can realize the protection or monitoring function.
